Solo on team Carol

So it's been announced that Solange Solo Knowles is one of the new faces of Carol's Daughter.

Carol's daughter founded in the early '90s and supported by a range of celebrities (including Jada Pinkett-Smith, MaryJ Blige Will Smith), now has a new recruit in the Carol army. Natural style icon Solange was chosen along with Cassie and Selita Ebanks (who? Victoria Secret model and co-star of Kanye's video 'Runaway') to be the faces of Carol's daughter Natural hair care and beauty products.
Is Cassie STILL rocking that hairstyle? Jheeze!
Apparently the aim is that through their different shades and hair types, Carol's Daughter will drive home that beauty is a 'polythnic' entity. I personally like this stance. But in all honesty couldn't they had included a beauty of a dark skin tone.... huh? Or an I just being too cynical??

Some may say that Solo is just hungry for publicity, but in my opinion this is a clever move. Let's face it-her music is cool but with her going down the more 'independent' route I do see her more as a model/DJ/i'm a celebrity just because kinda woman. She seems to be woman with high values & common sense-i mean she very publically left the awful House of Dereon-despite the clothes being designed by her own mother!

"I initially was involved as the spokesperson, but the clothes just didn't reflect my personal style and I decided to hand that over. That's the great thing about my family. We work together so closely that if something's not working out, we can be honest about it and there won't be any grudges or issues..."

So what do you think? is Solo chasing the dollars? Or is she staying true to her new natural image?

Let me know-leave a comment!

  1. You're not being cynical when I saw the announcement I was thinking this isn't representative! They're all light-skinned, again adhering to the "light-skinned" ideal that is lingering around. Anyway I love your blog I'm from London (currently transitioning to natural) as well so great to see a fellow London blogger.

  3. Interesting quote about her reason for no longer being a Dereon spokesmodel (who knew?).

I think this campaingn is a good look for Solange. I have read US coverage on the choice of spokesmodels and can see the issues some have taken with it from their hair types, to their complexions and to their notoriety.

Carol's Daughter has certainly evolved over the years and I used their products briefly (no particular reason) and have read that ever since they went mainstream i.e. being sold at Sephora, the formula of some products has changed.

Their trying to position their brand as a "polyethnic" brand and appeal to as many women as possible, but they might not be communicating this in the best way.

This may isolate Lisa Price's customer base who were buying her products since she was selling them out of her apartment many years ago. No one wants to feel like their being left out...or worse pushed out for another demographic. I doubt this is the intention of Carol's daughter, but it's all in how you communicate with the customer.
